Tahun lalu, Joey Alexander (13) sukses memukau penonton di ajang Grammy Awards 2016 yang diselenggarakan di Staples Center, Los Angeles, Amerika Serikat. Tahun ini sang pianis belia asal Indonesia ‘kembali’ ke ajang yang sama berkat nominasi yang diraihnya untuk kategori Best Improvised Jazz Solo lewat album keduanya “Countdown”.
Joey merupakan nominator Grammy termuda yang tahun lalu masuk dalam dua kategori: Best Improvised Jazz Solo dan Best Jazz Instrumental Album berkat debut albumnya “My Favourite Things” (2015). Sayangnya, ia belum bisa membawa pulang pialanya.
Seperti dilansir dari Associated Press, Joey merasa gembira bisa masuk nominasi Grammy tahun lalu, tapi ia lebih bersemangat ketika diminta tampil di panggung yang didominasi musik pop dengan membawakan jazz miliknya.
“Saya bahagia bisa berbagi musik yang mungkin belum pernah didengar oleh orang sebelumnya,” ucap penggemar Michael Jackson tersebut.
Seperti halnya album pertama, album Countdown yang dirilis September tahun 2016 lalu pun berhasil mencapai posisi puncak untuk penjualan album versi Billboard. Joey memperdengarkan skill-nya yang semakin matang, termasuk tiga komposisi orisinalnya di album tersebut.
“Saya menikmati berada di studio rekaman karena membuat saya menjadi musisi yang lebih baik. Namun, menjaga orisinalitas bukan hal mudah dan butuh waktu bagi saya untuk memadukan musiknya. Saya bersyukur banyak yang menikmatinya, baik saat mendengarkan album maupun menyaksikan penampilan saya,” ucap Joey yang mengaku terinspirasi oleh Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong dan Duke Ellington.
Apakah Joey berhasil membawa pulang piala Grammy pertamanya pada tanggal 12 Februari 2017 mendatang? Jangan lewatkan acara yang disiarkan langsung oleh jaringan CBS dari Staples Center di Los Angeles, AS pukul 17.00 waktu setempat. James Corden, The Weeknd, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Adele, hingga Metallica akan turut tampil memeriahkan penyelenggaraan Grammy ke-59.
